IS YOUR SEPTIC TANK COVERED BY YOUR HOME INSURANCE?If your septic tank fails or becomes damaged, it’s an issue that needs immediate attention before it becomes a big, and smelly, problem. Like any big piece of kit in your home and garden it can be costly to replace the tank or the drainage should it become damaged, but what many homeowners don’t know is that the cost may be covered by their homeowner’s insurance.
If it’s accidental damage, then you’re likely to be covered
Most insurance policies will cover you for accidental damage to underground services, which includes your septic tank, sewage treatment plant, drainage field and all connecting pipes. Just as your insurance would cover you if a tree fell on your house or if a burst radiator flooded your living room, your outside and underground systems are likely to be covered in the same way.
Of course, the precise definition of what is covered by your particular insurance will be different for everyone and depends on the individual insurer but generally, you will be covered for damage to the tank, soakaway or pipework due to:
- An increase in pressure of the surrounding water
- A vehicle driving over the system and damaging it
- Tree roots growing into the system or pipework
- Ground movement
