The Knowledge Gateway, University Of Essex Project

Essex university knowledge

Owls Hall Environmental successfully won the main drainage works for the Knowledge Gateway development at the University of Essex.  We were required to undertake complete works on both foul and surface water deep drainage systems. The drainage works was a design and build project within the main contractor Jacksons Civil Engineering construction works. The works included all roads, gulley work and drainage work ranging from 1.5 m deep to 4.5 m deep.

The site was located within a natural flood plain which added a unique dimension to the works. This type of domain requires experience and knowledge in civil engineering and the environment. Plus, the appropriate client approach to establish the right solutions with minimum disruption to the work programme.

The site and ground conditions were extreme as demonstrated within the attached pictorial representation. Not only did we encounter the worst winter for 100 years, the site was also prone to tidal flooding and had numerous conservation clauses and restrictions.

In spite of these severe conditions our Owls Hall team delivered their programme of works, enhancing our own skill-set through sheer determination and endeavour.

The key obstacles of the site were overcome and this allowed us to develop a programme of works that was both achievable and completed within the agreed time frame. This is a fantastic example of our capability, adaptability to the environment and local conditions. Plus, clearly demonstrates a level of expertise that allows Owls Hall Environmental to be seen as a contractor of choice for civil engineering and environmental projects.
