Septic tank installation by experienced engineersOwls Hall provides expert septic tank installation services. With 50 years experience, we are well placed to correctly advise you. Should you not be able to reach a mains sewer, you may have to install a septic tank and soakaway to deal with the waste from your home. With many different types of septic tanks to chose from, and many companies to supply and install the system, it can be a daunting task, but we’re here to make the process as smooth as possible.
How does a septic tank work?
4% of the population of the UK do not have access to mains drainage. In these cases, domestic sewage treatment plants and septic tanks are utilised. A septic tank is a fairly simple system, able to deal with wastewater problems on a small scale. It works as follows:
Sewage and greywater (e.g. from baths, washing machines, showers) is sent to the tank through pipes in the house.
Solids fall to the bottom of the tank.
The waste contains natural bacteria that cause a process of anaerobic decomposition that, after a period of time, breaks down the sludge in the tank.
Effluent is discharged into the soil through perforated pipes.
You cannot discharge effluent into a stream or ditch; in order to do this you must install a treatment plant.
Are there any problems with installing a septic tank?
Despite the fact that septic tanks are a useful method of processing wastewater, they are somewhat outmoded. They produce an unpleasant effluent that contains substantial amounts of odours, pathogens and similarly environmentally damaging substances. Because of this, a soakaway is essential, in order to further slow down the speed that waste enters watercourses and to help break down the organic substances.
Septic tanks should also be emptied on a regular basis. Add that to the problems that can occur with blocked soakaways and the smells that can emanate from pipework and the tank itself and it is not surprising that the majority of people are seeking to replace their septic tanks with cleaner and more efficient sewage treatment plants. If you decide to install a septic tank at your property we would recommend a tank that has a particle filter. This is useful to stop your soakaway from blocking.
It may be the case that a septic tank is still your best option. If so, make sure to have a look our range of septic tanks that we both sell and install, from Klargester, Premier Tech, Marsh and others.
